Scholarships for Physical Therapy Students in 2021

Physical therapists develop treatment plans and work alongside patients to improve their mobility and strength. These professionals have flexibility in their work environment and are employed by universities, hospitals and private practices, among other places. Physical therapists earn a median salary of $87,930 and employment in the field is projected to grow by 22%, which is faster than the average rate for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational outlook handbook.

Much of the growing demand for physical therapists comes in part from aging baby boomers, who need physical therapists to treat their mobility issues. Due to this increase in demand for PTs, now could be an opportune time to pursue a career as a physical therapist. In order to do so, you must earn a DPT, a doctor of physical therapy degree.

Keep reading to learn more about the cost of a doctor of physical therapy degree and explore DPT scholarships that may be available.

What is the Average Tuition for a Physical Therapy Doctorate?

Earning a doctoral degree can be a costly endeavor. However, the price of physical therapy school tuition varies from school to school.

The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) (PDF, 1.1MB) released average yearly tuition costs to earn a DPT. For the 2018-2019 academic year, the average tuition cost was $18,390 per year for public schools and $37,014 for private institutions. Tuition rose in the 2019-2020 academic year with the average tuition cost for public institutions at $18,989 and $37,448 for private schools.

How long does it take to become a physical therapist? The typical length of time it takes to complete a DPT program and earn your degree is three years. This is assuming you have already earned an undergraduate degree in a related field like kinesiology, exercise science or biology.

There are many factors that affect tuition prices. These include whether you are an in-state student or out-of-state student, the ranking of the school you choose to attend, and whether you pursue a hybrid online PT program where you might continue to work part time to offset the cost of PT school.
